Raw Guanaco Fibre

Guanacos have a double coat similar to cashmere; the under coat is a fine soft downy fibre and the outer coat consists of much coarser guard hairs which act to keep debris and moisture out. Guanaco fibre must go through the dehairing process which removes these coarser guard hairs and leaves the downy undercoat which is a wonderful light honey/cinnamon colour.

Guanaco has a micron count average of 12 – 17. Because the fibre itself has fewer scales than sheep’s wool, it has a much softer, less scratchy feel and handle. Because of the value of their fibre Guanaco are a protected species. This fibre comes from farmed animals who are well cared for.

This listing is for 100g of raw Guanaco fibre, the guard hairs still need removing, the fleece is roughly between 30% - 50% guard hair, dust and VM. The fleece itself does not need to be washed prior to spinning, most of the dust and small amounts of VM will fall out during the picking process and any remaining dust will easily wash out whilst you set the twist on your finished yarn.

Wonderful to spin on its own or blended with other fibres – it really is like spinning an airy fluffy cloud of heaven!
