This was a great pattern! It listed a couple of ways to knit the scarves and a list of the colors for each House with different brands and colors within those brands as suggestions. I looked at several others projects and decided to use the Knit Picks Swish Worsted. I knit a test swatch, not so much for gauge (the scarf itself can be the swatch) but to test the colorfastness of the yarn. The jade did not transfer to the grey at all. There was just a hint of green in the water but no transfer (several times I have had to re-skein and was the yarn first after being burned with fading).
I followed the pattern for knitting in the round and cast on the 90 stitches. I cast on with the recommended provisional cast on because I wanted to graft the ends then put on the fringe. My needle in my right hand (I am right handed) was the US 8 and US 5 in the left to speed the knitting a little and it worked wonderfully! I used the number of rows between colors as the pattern said but did not complete all 13 sections. I knit 10 sections of grey. With my gauge that gave me a scarf 88 inches long and 9.5 inches wide on the blocking board! I did not try to stretch it at all. I did make the fringe 10 inches rather than 8 so I would be able to do some trimming.
To help with the color jog, I lifted the stitch just under the first stitch of the round as I came to it and knit it together with that first stitch and it helped tremendously! I started out keeping the grey yarn attached between the 2 stripes of each section for the first couple of color changes. I changed to clipping and starting a new piece of yarn for each grey stripe as I was afraid I might have it either too tight or too loose. It just meant weaving in a few more ends. I did carry the green over the grey though.
The grey yarn running down the side of the scarf is used to make sure I kept the same line of stitches as the start/stop place and not do some funky twisting when blocking. Will pull it out when it is dry. I ordered the Slytherin patch from Amazon and washed it by itself and will sew it on after the scarf has dried. I will post a final pic with the patch.
Patch on and it is so cute! I finished the matching mittens and sewed a little conductive thread I purchased from Amazon into the thumbs. Works like a charm for touch screen devices ;)
