Go for the large size, but put a lifeline in where you would end the small stockinette section: if I run out of yarn, frog to lifeline and then proceed using the small stockinette + large lace combo.
For posterity, let it be known that I did successfully complete the large size, but with less than a gram of yarn left. I am the yarn chicken winner (which I fully attribute to having put in two different lifelines - if I hadn’t lifelined, I would have needed them, I’m sure).
