I wanted to make myself a Land Girl style jumper in Bottle green to wear on my New Allotment!
I could not find any original knitting patterns in the style they would have been issued with - The original issued Land Army uniform Pullover was mass produced so I would say from the ones I have seen it would have been machine knitted so I am guessing there is no ‘Official’ hand knit pattern.
The original Land army Pullover is essentially the same as this pattern, a long-sleeved, V-neck Jumper, knitted throughout in K1. P1. rib, using smaller needles/tension for the welts and Cuffs.
So when I found this free pattern form the V&A Museums archive I decided to give it a go. It was similar enough in style, and appeals to me as I am not fond of knitting excessive amounts of k1 p1 rib anyway! -This pattern would be simple enough to convert, though you might need to reduce the width a little to account for all the extra ease/stretch the rib will give and the neck band will need to be worked a little thicker!
Right on to the Knitting….
Noticed an error on the typed version of the pattern, should say under where it says wider. So it is 35 inches round bust (under arms).

BACK
I cast on 124st (added 10 st = two pattern repeat)
This should give me a 37inch chest roughly.
Worked 24 rows in K2,P2 rib.

Started on the main body will add 1” to length. So need 14” from cast on edge to armhole shaping. (94 rows)
19.02.11
Started armhole shaping

Finished Back.
26.02.11
Cast on for front knitted 24rows rib.
06.03.11
Slow progress, spent more time ripping back than actually knitting seems to be with dark wool harder to see mistakes until its too late!
24.03.11
About to start V-neck shaping, this is taking ages!! As distractions have set in!! and yarn knits up so slowly!
08.07.11
After a massive 4 month break (lazy period) finished front!
Must knit the sleeves but feeling very lazy toward this project it may well end up as a pullover!

So, I decided to forgo the sleeves and make it into a pullover, to save wasting any more time with this in the UFO pile.
Now it’s finished, I can see just how massive it is it came out much bigger than the 37” chest I was aiming for, partly a blessing as in the years since cast on I have got a bit bigger, but even with the bit of extra weight, it is still MASSIVE!
I should have checked my tension before I started it, you live and learn!
