Checking your gauge
To ensure your square will be 10”x10” after blocking you will need to knit the cross rib stitch pattern at gauge, 26 sts = 4”. It is important to knit a gauge swatch and adjust needle size as needed to get gauge. This step will take extra time, however it is the only way to be certain your finished square will be the correct size.

Knitting Cables
The cross rib stitch pattern uses three different crossed cable stitches that are defined in the stitch glossary of the pattern. All three of the cable stitches in this pattern are variations on basic crossed cables.

A Note About Stitch Markers
A total of 66 stitches are cast on for this square. While working Row 1 of the Cross Rib Stitch you will place a maker after the first two stitches and then before the final two stitches of the row. The stitches that lie outside the markers will be knit on every row (garter stitch) and the stitches between will be worked in the Cross Rib Stitch. These 4 edge stitches (2 on each side for a total of 4) are included on the Cross Rib Stitch chart. As you continue working the Cross Rib Stitch you will slip the markers as they are encountered. The written pattern and chart do not explicitly say to slip the markers on every row. This is stated in the pattern note section.
