Notes

I need a belt to to wear with my Estonian national costume. The costume is Viru-Nigula parish costume, hence the project name. My costume is handmade by my grandmother, but it doesn’t have correct belt. This belt is the one recommended to make with the items I have. There is another belt on museum site but I decided to use this pattern as it is widest and goes well with my skirt colors.

Original museum piece ERM 12711

12.6.2015 Pattern repeat is 7 cm long and I’ve done now 4 pattern repeats. I counted that I need 42 repeats to get 3 m so it will be awhile before its finished.
25.6.2015 14 repeats now.
29.6.2015 16 repeats “under poles”.
1.7.2015 18 repeats. I have a dilemma now.
I really want to add few repeats of ERM 12706 pattern in the belt as well but i’m not sure where to add them. I’m currently at the middle of the belt, if I add the repeats here they will be hidden when belt is worn but if I add them at the end of the belt they will be visible. Its a kind of no-no to mix the patterns, although there are examples of the belts where half of the belt is woven with different pattern. The other belt is from the same area, the pattern and colour is similar to the one I’m making. The difference is mainly in the border and in the middle symbol. I don’t want to do half and half (the other half would have wrong borders and thus would be completely wrong as a belt for folk costume) but if I could hide few repeats of the other belt in mine it would be a neat secret. If I would be a better belt maker I could add the “wrong” repeats at the end of the belt and wear the beginning at the top, but my beginning is a bit wonky and I hope that the end will be better looking. So I don’t know what to do.
4.7.2015. 20 repeats. I did about 3 cm of the other pattern but it didn’t feel right. Honestly I felt guilty which is silly but I decided to undo it. I measured that one repeat is now 6 cm so I need to do more than 42 repeats. Not even half way but I still have time.
5.7.2015 26 repeats.
7.7.2015 28 repeats. I got a new sword and it is so much better than the broken one.
9.7.2015 33 repeats.
I think I’m about half done now. I had to move the belt away from one pole because it had got too tight and the weaving room at the beginning got way too short. I can do 3 repeats now before I have to move the belt and there is more room to work. I’ve done the belt for about a month now and now I feel that I could actually finish it within a week. I don’t know if that is correct or not but I plan to weave at least 2 repeats every day and more at weekend. I need to finish the belt so I can do OTHER STUFF besides belt weaving.
11.7.2015 43 repeats. I have reached the second last pole so maybe I can finish it tomorrow.
12.7.2015. 47 repeats, such a random number. It’s finished and I am quite happy with it.
