Making for DD2. She had the Red Heart multi-colored kids yarn already and loved the colors, which will match her new room colors, so I decided to make the owls solid coordinating colors and use the multi for the “Eggs” (in-between motifs).
Using my own method to join, but discovered it is called a ‘flat zipper’ join. Instructions can be found here: http://www.lookatwhatimade.net/crafts/yarn/crochet/join-c...
4/12/15 Finished all but the border, eyes/noses and weaving in some ends. DD was so patient, I wanted her to enjoy the blanket and will do the border and eyes when it gets closer to fair time.
Created my own half-hexagon motif to fill in near border which uses similar stitches as the center of the motifs, rather than the open work of the motifs from the pattern.
Overall size so far is 43” x 66”. 24 owls, 15 large motifs, 38 small motifs, 16 half-hexs.
This blanket was so much fun to make, I will DEFINITELY make this again, but on a much smaller scale - 9-12 owls. Already bought some other variegated yarn to try different color combos :)
7/5/15: Completed the border, using this “wave” design for inspiration http://www.ravelry.com/projects/Saffiran/owl-obsession
Did 1 round of SC to give a nice even edge across all of the motifs, then 2 rounds of HDC and the wave border. Went back and did top SS over the SC row to tie it in to motif connections and give it a finished look.
7/18/15: Used this “Wagon Wheel” embroidery technique for the eye pupils: http://www.craftimism.com/2013/06/embroidered-eye-tutoria...
7/22/15: FINISHED!! Only had a couple of mishaps along the way: my magic ring didn’t hold on one of the owls. I since make sure to use a double magic ring, and weave in a 2” or so tail. Also, one of the owl ears was coming apart from not weaving in a long enough end. Definitely turned into a “weave as you go” girl with this project! It will also be beneficial to sew on eyes and beaks as soon as owls are done.
7/27/15: Won 1st place at the Fair, and also BEST OF SHOW!! :D
12/2015: Made a second blanket with only 20 owls. Learned time-saving technique for fewer ends to weave in - attach in strips! Project notes here: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/Herself10/owl-obsession-2
03/2016: Made a third blanket with only 12 owls. Project notes here: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/Herself10/owl-obsession-3
Update 11/8/21: After making several of these blankets, I finally fine-tuned the half hexagon pattern I made up and posted it in the photos.
