4.22.2017 - My grandson, Braydon, is now 7 and the sweater is too small for him. However, now he has a little sister, Makayla, who is 4 and petite. In the picture she has just come out of the new Smurf movie. She is wearing the Smurf sweater as it’s now hers.

Before my Grandson was born, I knew it would be a boy, but I didn’t know his name, so I called him “Smurf”. It seems only natural that I would make him a Smurf sweater for his first birthday on January 30th, okay, make that Valentine’s Day.
The graph came from an old Gary Kennedy pattern. The pattern called for Patons’ Astra yarn, a sport-weight. Instead, I knit it in Sandnes Garn Lanett, a fingering-weight yarn, using Berroco’s “Johnny Boy” pullover as a template. (I won’t use this pattern again as I had some issues with the neckband and sleeves)
For the shoulder buttons I’ve ordered mushroom buttons from Textile Garden. I ended up not making the buttonflap, but sewed the buttons onto the shoulder anyway, as decoration. A Smurf needs a toadstool, afterall!!
I ordered the yarn by mail from Wool-Tyme in Nepean. I decided that the blue was too dark, so I bought a lighter blue at Wool-Tyme in Kingston when I was there on vacation.
