This is the second set of flags woven as a prototype for an art show I’m in
PAST-
The base of the flag is black and grey. These colors represent the past as being something unchangeable. The yarn I spun for the PAST flag is spun from scraps of previous projects. Textured bits and smooth spots, brights and darks spun together, balancing experiences. This yarn is plied with a yarn spun from newspaper. The newspaper yarn represents written history- a continued story. By plying these yarns together, they create a story- our journey- history intertwined with our experiences and emotions.
PRESENT-
The base of the PRESENT flag is woven as a sunrise/sunset. The bright shades interlock, creating a progression of day to night. The yarn I spun for this flag is white/natural which represents that we move through the experiences in our lives trying to learn and take all we can from the color that surrounds us. I spun this yarn with texture, keeping it as natural as it is on the animal as possible to represent being true and as close to whom we are we are able. There is one piece of newspaper yarn at the top of this flag- because we learn as we go. Each experience is a lesson and it’s not yet a continued story as it is in our past.
FUTURE-
The FUTURE flag is woven with an ethereal thread that has just a touch of sparkle. It’s woven transparently. We can see a vision of our future, but it’s not solid; and there’s a little sparkle from stars wished upon and pennies thrown into fountains. The base is woven with “holes” because even with careful planning, things will still happen and life still continues. The yarn I spun for this flag I spun over sequins, representing experiences not yet had, dreams not yet accomplished. This yarn is also very transparent, and with little color, because our future yarn is not yet spun.
These flags also have a progression- the past flag base is neutral with a colorful spun yarn, the present flag is brightly woven with a neutral yarn and the future flag is all transparent.
