First project begun in 2022.
I can’t find my 1898 project bag, so this is - at least temporarily - on Knit Picks Nickel Plated interchangeables.
Need to go slowly, because I need to make a new ‘cheat sheet’ as I go along, because mine is in the mislaid 1898 Hat project bag. So are the stitch markers I prefer to use.
Crochet hook cast-on.
Miscounted on the first section - 16 rows instead of 18. Maybe I’ll add them when doing the last section, even if that means an off-centre seam in back.
WHY another hat? Because I saw this on Knitting Paradise: https://www.knittingparadise.com/t-723699-3.html#16566859
The plan is to leave the crown open, dividing the stitches by three or four (to be determined), and knit separate, gradually narrowing, ‘tails’ which will be braided to close the top and hang down colourfully.
The headband is such a light grey, it looks white, when there’s nothing else white in view. Three full balls, and a partial. I could do it in one colour, but I have neon colours that want to be in it! Neon braid it will have.

Headband done!
To do a four-strand braid (round, not flat), I’ll begin with 21 stitches of each neon colour worked helix style.

Three days ago, I had a clear with white trim shoulder bag - ‘straps’ are gold-tone chains - from which I removed some partial balls of neon yarns. I have seen that bag almost daily for YEARS, yet now that I’ve run out of one of the neons, that bleeping bag has become invisible!!!
So, I’m going to sleep. Maybe it will reappear in the morning, and I’ll be able to continue on the tails of this hat. Or, I’ll excavate the box wherevI know the rest of the neons are, and grab full balls!
Having studied the original patter more closely, it appears to be done with s thicker yarn. Too bad. This will be a skimpier version in light worsted weight yarns.
