Construction - rough guide
This was made as 2 circles for the face in black with one row of variegated to define. I worked some chain between the two circles for the shoulder.
Rows were then worked around the circles (increasing as you would for a circle) across the chain (increasing across the centre). I worked in treble (dc for US) and threw in some taller sts (dtr or tr for US) to start filling the angles where shoulder meets circle. Eventually I got an oval shape.
The spikes were worked by marking out roughly where they were required. I think there were about 20 or sts per spike in mine. Each spike was worked something like:
12 ch, sl st into 3rd ch from hook, dc (US sc) into next 2, htr (US hdc) into next 3, tr (US dc) into 2, dtr (US tr) into next, ttr (US dtr) into next. An extra ttr was worked into the original st to get the spike to tilt up. Work dc (US sc) to beg of next spike.
When spikes all made, I worked a row of dc (US sc) around the edge, increasing a few sts on the upper side of the spikes and decreasing a few on the lower side to exaggerate the curve of the spike.
The eyes are simple circles appliqued on. The mouth was worked from top down. Please see pic.
