Testing gauge, and it was achieved with 3.75mm needles.
Here we go…. First little hurdle, the provisional cast-on. After some googling it turns out there are several ways of doing it, the one that seems easiest to me is the one using a crochet chain. I like the fold-over edge, such a simple thing to do, and it gives the garment such a polished look! Now I have to actually fold the edge and knit the live stitches from the needles and the ones from the provisional cast-on together. As I am knitting the 6 month size, and it’s in the round, this is not the easiest thing to accomplish. I also just realized that when I try to unravel the crochet’ chain, it seems that I started at the wrong end! Huh.
Took 30 minutes, but I managed to get the stitches off the crochet chain and onto another set of needles. Knitting the 2 together.
I am flying now…this is going fast.
Making the sleeves.
Done
Time to join this thing together.
The instructions are not clear as to where the beginning of round marker should be. I guess it’s up to each knitter if it’s front or back. I chose to put it in the back. The first few rows are VERY hard to knit , due to the fact that the sleeves and the body are joined together, just keep going, it works out and gets easier.
Doing the raglan shaping now.
Decided to bind off using my trusty super-stretchy bind off, to make sure that there won’t be any issues pulling the sweater over a baby’s head.
On to the ruffles. I have not done crochet in a very long time.
The pattern suggests 3 crochets per stitch, this is coming out way too dense for me, and I am not confident I have enough yarn, will go with the double crochet. Plus I am doing it in every bump created by the purl row. I am not sure that’s what’s meant, but that’s the way I am doing it.
I better not run out of yarn.
Whew! Done, with barely any yarn left!!!
Evaluation: The ruffles are very cute, but I would not have spaced them this close together. I would have preferred to have them further apart, and probably one row less. Still looks cute though, but I am wondering about the neckline. It is super-stretchy, which is what I was going for with my bind-off, however it looks very loose, and I am not confident that blocking it will fix this. Hm…..what to do, what to do???
Decided to undo the neck and a couple of rows, then knit them back and forth (meaning no longer in the round, and do a regular bind-off. This means I have to add a small button at the back, but it takes care of the bigger opening, and the neckline looks WAY better.
How exciting, my first little modification!
Conclusion: Love it, it’s an adorable little cardigan!
