I came up with this after seeing something similar. I wanted something easy for a beginner knitter class. This allows a new knitter to practice knit and purl while following a simple pattern. I used bulky yarn and large needles for simplicity.
Cast on 18 stitches. Note: You can use any number. Eighteen just happens to make a nice width. I taught my class the knitted cast on, but use whatever is easiest for you.
Knit the first 2 rows.
For each row after, you will knit the first and last 2 stitches.
R3: knit 18
R4: K2, P14, K2
R5: K 18
R6: K2, P14, K2
R7: K2, P14, K2
R8: K18
R9: K2, P14, K2
R10: K18
Repeat rows 3-10 until the scarf is as long as you like. Knit the last 2 rows. Bind off.
