Bust the Stash Project 14

Use a combo of these 3 colours to make striped socks…

OK, with math I figured out that I’ll use 37.5g per sock. For 4 repeats of 3 colours (of 9.37g in each quarter of the sock), given my ratios, I’ll do this:

Light blue - 6 rows
Beige - 8 rows
Purple - 4 rows
Light blue - 6 rows
Purple - 4 rows
Beige - 8 rows

Man, this is tricky. Carrying up 2 strands of yarn (cuz I’m using 3 diff colours) is not particularly invisible in some spots. Mind you, I am learning as I go. Instead of just knitting a stockinette sock, now I have to remember to do all the following:

  • Keep my skeins of yarn from becoming a tangled mess (I hate this about colour work.)
  • Carry up the yarns every row such that they don’t show (can’t always go in the same direction with the twisting of the yarn or the colours can show through - it’s a very strange thing. Seems to owe more to magic than science).
  • Remember to do the jogless jog on the first stitch of the second second row of the new colour (pick up right leg of the stitch below and knit it with the current stitch)
  • Remember when to switch colours (it’s harder to keep this straight than you’d imagine - esp. when you’re thinking of everything at the same time).

In the end, I decided that carrying up 2 strands each round was too bulky and affected the tension too much. So I just cut the ends and made sure to twist the yarns when I started a new round. It was a lot of end weaving but the socks look better this way. And I hate it when balls of yarn get continually tangled, as three colours always do. Did the jogless jog.

Used 33 g Tosh, 23 g Koigu light blue and 14 g Koigu purple in the end.
