Yey! I got the One Skein Wonders book as a RAK from fellow knitter imablondie, and promptly found a great use for the Moonlight Mohair I recently purchased.
So, there’s a mistake in the pattern (it tells you to cast on 20 stitches instead of the required 40) but that’s perfect for me. Since I am using bigger needles and have a little less yardage, 20 stitches is exactly what I should be casting on!
Right, so the trouble with adjusting a lace pattern is that you have to adjust the whole pattern! I ran into a problem when I got to the pattern stitch, because it uses all 40 stitches! Oy. Here’s the pattern stitch:
Row 1: K2, (K2tog) twice, (yo, K1) four times, (K2tog) four times; repeat from to last 10 stitches, (yo, K1) four times, (K2tog) twice, K2.
An adjusted pattern would go:
Row 1:K2, (K2tog) twice, (yo, K1) twice, (K2tog) twice, (yo, K1) twice, (k2tog) twice, K2.
As a chart it would look like this:
* * / / o * o * / / o * o * / / * *
But then somehow I end up with 18 stitches instead of 20. Grumble. I just taught myself freaking charting just to transpose the pattern to this point, by the way. Easy pattern my ass. Headthump.
After a full 24 hours of freaking out on the forums and fighting with this pattern (there was a long foray into 22 stitches that had to be frogged), I’ve discovered that by adding an extra yarnover I get the number of stitches I need to get 20 stitches.
Row 1: K2, (k2tog) twice, (yo, k1) twice, yo, (k2tog) twice, (yo, k1) twice, yo, (k2tog) twice, k2
Chart: * * / / o * o * o / / o * o * o / / * *
I’m going to block it to be longer and thinner when I’m done knitting it, and that should take care of any oddities in the length and/or width.
I just picked this thing back up after a week or two of ignoring and my new stitches are WRONG!!! I follow the pattern exactly and it still looks screwy. Sigh. I discovered my mistake. I hadn’t knit in so long that I was purling backwards. facepalm
Update:
I actually really liked knitting this scarf - it was the first lace I did that actually went pretty smoothly, and I was really thrilled that I could follow along with the pattern. I got messed up on one of the shells, eventually, and had difficulty picking up stitches and figuring out what was going on. It didn’t help that the yarn is totally unsuited for lace, so I really couldn’t see things clearly at all. I realize now that while I love the yarn, it does not belong with this scarf and so I’m going to frog it and repurpose it for a garter stitch scarf.
