Advice for this pattern!!
This pattern has a truly 80s-shape so I can only recommend adjusting the length of the bodice (see my notes below). I also recommend knitting in the round and steeking.

I really like this cardigan and the pattern but since it was the first time I knitted an Icelandic style jumper in rounds it was a bit tricky. I also have to say that the Swedish translation of the pattern was a bit vague and did for example not include the measurements in cm so that I didn’t know how long the sleeves and the body had to be. As a result, it doesn’t fit me very well but this might also have to do with the 1980s-style fit :-).

If you are an experienced knitter and you have done this style of jumper before it should be pretty much straight forward but for me there was a lot of thinking and learning involved.

P.S.: I didn’t dare to work with a steek on my first Icelandic cardigan so I knitted it back-and-forth which worked out ok. But for my next cardigan I’ll try steeking to make it a little easier and keep the right tension.

Update 1
One thing I realized when talking to my mum (who also knitted this model) is that the reason for the weird, boxy shape and the badly fitting sleeves is that the yoke pattern is too long. That causes the sleeves to hang too low - at least for my body shape. I calculated, based on the “Aftur” pattern that fitted me perfectly, that I probably just have to take a few rows off the pattern and translate this to make the stitches even. Worth a try!

Update 2
After 2 years or so I finally got the courage to pick this project up again and unravel pretty much the whole bodice. Ouf!

I left the sleeves but since I had knitted them flat I only made them a bit tighter and cut off the excess yarn (not very elegant, I know, but it did the job and you can hardly see the seam).

Lopi yarn is not the best to unravel since it felts very quickly and it was tangled already. It also lost a lot of its volume - I suppose the rough unraveling process takes a way those shorter, fluffy fibres that are not part of the main thread. I ended up with a yarn that was a lot thinner than the original so I also adjusted my needle size, I think I went down to a 3 or 3.5.

This time I took proper measures and followed the “Aftur” pattern except for the hem which I did in rib again, for stretchiness. I also altered the button band and instead of sewing it on I picked up the stitches directly from the steek (knitting in the round makes SO much more sense for Lopi sweaters!!).

Finally, I took a few rows out of the yoke to make the sleeves start a bit higher and to avoid the low-hanging armholes. Actually it wasn’t so much but it makes a hell of a difference! Now I regret that I didn’t take any pictures wearing the first version because it doesn’t look like it would fit a human being at all.

It was a lot of work but it’s worth it, now I have a cardigan that I like wearing and I will actually take with me on my first trip to Iceland!
