Notes

The first cold weather of the season blew in overnight, and I’m taking it as a sign that it’s time to finally start a v-stitch afghan. I’ve looked and looked, compared all the patterns I’ve found, weighed pros and cons, and finally decided on this pattern. The color scheme I chose is a bit different from what I usually gravitate toward, but I think I’m going to like it.

The first row or two feel-- and look-- awkward, but keep with it. It quickly whips itself into better shape after another couple of rows, and then those initial rows look just fine. :o)

November 16th--
Heh. I think I started out using an I hook, then accidentally switched to an H after a brief break from working on the afghan. I don’t think there’s a noticeable difference at least, which is good, since there’s no way I’d rip back all those rows. (g) I guess I’ll switch back to the I hook now… Not sure what’s best practice in this situation, but it shouldn’t cause a visible difference to switch up one hook size.

January 30th--
Finished! I ended with a turquoise row, since that was the color I started with. I also used the turquoise for the sides of the blanket-- two rows of single crochet per side. The first row was a little messy, since it was a selvedge with lots of loose tails to crochet over. I just did my best to keep it even. If the ends pop out a little here and there, so be it. It’s kind of a crazy, scrappy afghan, anyway, and a few stray bits of yarn poking out aren’t going to hurt anything.

We’ve been using the blanket for the past week, in its unfinished state, and I’m surprised at how warm it is, considering how many holes there are in this type of crocheted fabric. It wouldn’t by my first choice for the coldest nights, but it’s plenty warm enough to combat a slight chill.

I took my time with this blanket, pausing for weeks at a time to work on other projects, but the pattern is easily memorized, and each row works up very quickly.

Here’s a list of the yarns I used:

Turquoise
Paprika
