I’ve been admiring hats with “leafy” patterns for so long… It’s time to finally try knitting one!
The pattern calls for DK, but the yarn I want to use is worsted. Others have done it, so I’ll be referring to their project notes.
Cast on 112 sts using the German Twisted (a.k.a. Old Norwegian) cast-on. I considered casting on “in pattern” (k1p1 for the ribbing), but I was having trouble with the purl version of the cast-on, so I finally decided the all-knit version was good enough. ;o) (Maybe I’ll try the more advanced version on the next hat I knit…)
Following the written instructions, but referring to the charts as a double-check that my even-numbered rounds are correct (in the placement and numbers of purls and knits).
It seems to be going alright, but I’m not sure how much the patterning will show. Probably a little blocking will make the leaves more visible-- or at least so I hope!
Just finished! Still have to weave in the ends and block it, but I tried it on, and the brim is definitely good as it is. (If anything, it could be a little snugger-- but I’d rather it be like this than uncomfortably tight.) I wonder if blocking the hat over a plate or something would help open up/reveal the patterning and make for a slightly slouchier fit? As it is, it’s just a little roomy at the top.
Anyway, even as it is, it’s a perfectly good hat. If I made this pattern again, though, I might try to use a lighter color yarn. I suspect that would show the pattern more. Not sure about using DK weight, though… I’m afraid that working this pattern as written in DK would feel a bit tight for me.
