I did the first birdie with the I hook, and it is HUGE with worsted yarn. I worked the second with an H…it’s a little smaller, but I think I may go smaller yet. I did not see items in the designer’s pics to lend to the scale of the birds, and while she does write the size, I don’t visualize that stuff very well.
Speaking of stuffing, I’m not planning to stuff these…there are a lot of yarn ends inside, and I haven’t decided yet that my birdies need stuffing…just skipping it for now. :)
In any case, I love even the big one, and I am going to make a bunch! With the Red Heart Super Saver, I will use the H hook. With the afghan yarn (which is a little lighter), I used a D (it’s a steel hook, noted as size 0).
With the afghan yarn, I’ve made 2 birds with 7 rounds (as the pattern indicates), and 10 birds with 5 rounds. I have 5 super-bright colors (plus white and olive green), and I rather enjoy the slightly smaller size. As for beaks and wings, I’ve done two as per pattern, and I’ve improvised on the smaller birds’ pieces parts…now I just have to figure out how I’d like to string them up. They are so bright and happy and fun!
I am calling these done. My faves are definitely the ones with 5 rounds. =D So, now that these are done, on I go to the next obsessioin…err, set of toys and fun things! lol!
