I found an old knitting pattern of a picot fringe. My inner child started playing with it - free forming!
|Believe it or not - THIS IS KNITTING!
I am very excited about the possibilities for freeform with this picot playing!!!
The idea is from a very old Dutch series of books “Alles over breien”. But…. I did not do it exactly like that, but freeformed with it. I am very excited about the possibilities with this. I will try to describe my method:
Each time you CO extra stitches, you use the knitted CO method.
You start with a chosen number of stitches (even 8 stitches can be enough). Then you turn and make for example 4 picots - out of the first stitch. For this you CO an additional 3 stitches, then BO 3 stitches, {put last stitch back at left needle and CO 3 st, BO 3 st} 3 times. Now you have made 4 picots out of one stitch. Then you can BO for example 2 more stitches. Now you can choose how to go on. You can make another set of picots at this point or you can CO more stitches than are needed for the picot, before making another set of picots. You can also make picots of 2 or 4 stitches and/or a combination of them…. Many variations possible.
Update, September 2016: I have experimented a bit more with picot knitting and written a picot knitting lesson for the New Leaf FFAL at the international Freeform Forum IFFF. See link.
