Finished size: 62” wide x 29.5” long.

4 days to knit (see notes below for bind-off problems).
-----------------------------------------------
Because the first stitch of every row is slipped purlwise with yarn in front, and because the lace sections were fairly long (for yarn carrying anyway), I decided NOT to carry the yarns up the side but rather to cut them. I know I’ll have a bunch of ends to weave in, but I thought it made a better looking edge. Yes, I actually tried it carrying up the yarn for a couple of color changes, didn’t like it, took it out, and started over at the first color change.

I did a regular purl bind-off (loosely) with size 8 needles, which ended up to be WAY too tight. The whole bottom edge of the shawl “cupped” so much that I couldn’t even block it after having soaked it all morning (6/23/13). So I just laid it out and waited for it to dry, which took til the evening. I took out the bind-off row and then did a stretchy bind-off with size 8 needles. I knew this bind-off would be looser because about halfway through the bind-off row, I ran out of the yarn that I had originally used for the regular bind-off and had to join some more yarn to finish. However, that came out a little TOO loose and just didn’t look right, especially blocking it with a straight bottom edge. So the next day (6/24/13) I took out the bind-off row yet again and re-did the stretchy bind-off, this time tightly and with size 4 needles. That was a bit better, which I knew it would be since I had about a yard of leftover yarn from the previous stretchy bind-off. I wasn’t going to re-block this time, but I still didn’t like the way it looked so I decided to re-block (3rd time!), this time with points instead of straight across because the straight across just made the edge look icky. I like the points much better and they go with the “wavy” look of the shawl. I have to say, I’ve never had such problems with a bind-off before. This is the first time I’ve ever had to block a shawl THREE TIMES! To anyone who makes this shawl, please be aware of the bind-off issues and keep checking it and laying it out as you go through the bind-off, so you don’t end up doing what I had to do.
