The Zebra Clutch/Purse is made using the overlay version of Lilla Björn Crochet’s Brioche Waves pattern.
I have to make more of these! Next time I will use mercerized cotton.
Finished size: 24 cm X 12 cm X 5 cm (9.5 in X 4.7 in X 2 in)
MAIN PIECE
Chain 52 (= 3 pattern repeats).
Crochet row 1-52, 5-52, 5-14 (all in one piece).
Continue with yarn held double and crochet sc with yarn A along all 4 edges like this:
Long sides: crochet 1 sc in each stripe made with yarn A, 2 sc in each stripe made with yarn B.
Short sides: 1 sc in each sc.
Corners: 3 sc in the corner st.
I also added a couple of rows of surface slip stitches to the edge of the flap and the edge of the front to make the edges more firm.
It’s important to block the main piece to get straight edges!
STABILIZER AND LINING
To stabilize the clutch, I’ve used synthetic felt - 2 mm felt at back, front and flap, and 3 mm felt at bottom and top. See last image!
Attache stabilizer and lining after you’ve made the sc edge. (Note that the sc edge are not visible in the stabilizer/lining image.)
Cut and sew the felt pieces to the back side of the crocheted fabric. See image 1. (The image shows the front side of the fabric only to show you where on the fabric you need to place the 3 mm felt.)
Cut the lining with 1 cm (0.4 in) seam allowance. Fold the edges and sew the lining 3 mm from the edges (leave the back loop of the sc edge free). Add a seam along each side of the top and bottom felt pieces as in image 2.
SIDES
Make the sides with yarn held double.
All rows starts with ch 1 + sc in same st as ch.
row 1: Ch 23, sc in second ch from hook, sc in rest of ch, turn (22 sts)
row 2: 21 sc, 3 sc in next st, continue along the other side with 3 sc in next st, 21 sc, turn (48 sts)
row 3: 8 sc, 14 hdc, 3 hdc in next st, 2 hdc, 3 hoc in next st, 14 hdc, 8 sc, turn (52 sts)
row 4: 10 sc, 13 hdc, 3 hdc in next st, 4 hdc, 3 hdc in next st, 13 hdc, 10 sc, turn (56 sts)
row 5: 12 sc, 32 hdc, 12 sc (56 sts)
Continue with 9 sc across the top of the piece.
Make one more.
Fold the side piece in two and place a D-ring 1,5 cm (0.6 in) from the top with the flat side in the bottom of the fold. Attach the D-ring by sew from the back side around the flat side and the side piece.
Align the bottom center of the side piece with the center of the bottom felt. Attache the sides along the front/bottom/back using zip join (the second method on this page: http://www.lillabjorncrochet.com/2015/08/3-ways-to-join-g...).
Crochet and attach a button loop. Attach a button.
