shell pattern. each color is 15 shell stitches in length. i worked through a full color sequence (30 shells across and a J hook). mine came out to 65” wide. individual tension may vary.
inspired by brenda-leigh’s post in the planned pooling group in 11/2016.

i made my blanket to shift over by one shell.
i think Marly C Bird has the best description of the concept of planned pooling in her youtube tutorials. https://youtu.be/sKSCPl7w6sA
once you understand how it works, it works out pretty easy.
i didn’t count starting chains. it’s more about the number of stitches in each color. this one in particular is 15 shell stitches in each color (depending on my tension- yours may vary).
tips:
1) it is 2 colors with the exact same length.
note: even numbered rows will start and end with 3dc in the top of the sc from the row before. this 3d counts as one shell.
2) i didn’t use different size hooks. i used a J hook throughout, but i changed my tension the entire time making sure that i tightened and loosened tension to ensure there were 15 shells in each color. this is especially useful on the odd rows.

as of 10/29/17- i have completed 5 skeins and had to go up a hook size due to the length difference in the skein.
8 skeins measures 58” wide by 42” tall.
7/13/19- after 2.5 years, i decided to finish this one. the yarn is now discontinued, so i had to rip back 2 rows to get an even finish point at a half diamond. i also started the border
round 1
border- on the sides, 2hdc in each side of shell and 1hdc in each sc evenly to the end. 3hdc in corner.
bottom- hdc in each stitch across
top- sc in middle dc of shell, hdc in next 2 hdc, dc in sc (all the way across). turn.
round 2
sides- hdc in flo of each stitch across. 3hdc in each corner stitch.
bottom- hdc in flo across however hdc2tog every 5th stitch (at the middle shell stitch).
top- hdc in flo across however hdc2tog every 5th stitch. turn.
round 3- hdc in flo of each stitch across, 3hdc in each corner stitch. fasten off and turn.
round 4 - in green- moss stitch all the way around, 3 moss stitches in every corner. turn.
round 5- moss stitch with 2 chains between each. 3 moss stitches in each corner.
