I cast on 64 stitches, based on my measurements and gauge this should have fit me. However, the sock is large enough to be bed socks for my partner! It’s not a problem, but I’m not sure where I went wrong.
As I have never knit socks before I have decided to keep knitting to see how they come out and practise the different elements. My partner loves the colour and is excited about getting them closer to Christmas (which might be when I finish!)
Next time I will cast on two sizes smaller and see how they fit me.
General comments: I loved the recipe patterns Ann give in the book and this really helped my understand where I could change my sock for a better fit, or for different people. I’m still to master a few elements, but I really enjoyed it.
My main concern was that the pattern (and I have it on authority from others) is not quite correct in dimensions of finished socks, even at gauge… so I’m going to use the recipe idea Ann gives as a guide to writing my own sock pattern. That I think is an invaluable part of this book.
I guess that’s maybe the point in the end… everyone’s feet are different and hand knit socks are bespoke pieces really.
11/10/2013 - Ok… having had some PMs from the lovely Ann Budd herself I feel certain it could just be a negative ease problem… or a lack there of in the considerations of my measurements.
Based on this I’m going to cast on a second pair soon and play around with negative ease… I think as I eluded too above, this might just be a simple case of casting on a size smaller than my 1st version… we’ll see.
