Jan. 2012: I stumbled across this pattern here on ravelry--or rather, stumbled across pictures of this scarf here on raverly--a year or two back and was just blown away. I “queued” it for a year or so and then finally got down to business, hunting down Kauni Effektgarn and all…
Now, the pattern comes in two widths, and I swatched the thin version of this back in January or February 2011, working in the round, and it looked like it was going to be way too thin for my taste, so I put it aside and just ignored it. I started over in January 2012 using the wider pattern, and extending it to twice the pattern width—half in pattern, then half all in black stockinette stitch—so that I’ll be able to fold it in half, sew up the side, and have it backed by itself, instead of having to sew on some other piece of cloth as backing. The yarn feels light enough to me that this double-thickness won’t be a problem.
I’ll post pictures as I think of taking them. First off, 1/14/12: An inch of 1x1 rib and then the first 1-1/2 pattern repeats. I started the multicolored yarn near the end of the purple zone as it starts shading into deep blue.
3/7/12: It’s March now, and I’ve completed only 5 repeats (not a lot of time for knitting these days), but I have to say I pretty much LOVE my scarf already. It’s soft, and I think it’s going to be somewhere between “pretty” and “stunning.” I really should have added another stitch to the outside borders, maybe even two, where I’ll be sewing the edges together, but I’m NOT going back to the beginning, and I know it’ll all be just fine when I block it… right?
10/30/12: Knitted a bit this summer with all my traveling. Now 46” long, 16+ repeats. It looks like the Kauni yarn colors may run to just about the perfect length for the scarf to have one complete rainbow spectrum and be a good, wearable length.
12/31/12: Winter vacation has brought me to the end of the scarf at last. Finished knitting it on a flight from Reno to Chicago. I cheated a little with the last color… the orange was going on forever and it was time to end the scarf, so I skipped ahead a bit to be sure to get in something more like red before ending it. Now to block and then sew up the ends and the side.
1/1/13: Blocking. Sigh. I think it stretched out several inches in length. Not a tragedy, but I liked the length as it was.
1/5/13: Sewn up and done, photographed, and ready to wear. Love it.
