The hexies are easy to crochet. At first I thought I would use all colors in my stash but finally decided to go with three only: red, white and a deep turquoise - all in Caron Simply Soft acrylic yarn from my stash. I’m using an H hook.
I finally settled on my color pattern using turquoise (yarn name is “Blue Mint” 9608) for the starting hex with the following number of hexes for each round:
1st: turquoise (1 total)
2nd: white (6 total);
3rd: red (12 total);
4th: white (18 total);
5th: turquoise (24 total);
6th: white (30 total);
7th: red (36 total);
8th: white (42 total);
9th: turquoise (48 total);
10th: white (54 total).
I only have one skein of turquoise so I may only be able to have two rounds in that color. Once I am finished with the 8th round I can decide if it is the size I want for a lap throw or not. I’ll probably add a simple edging.
The only issue I have had so far is joining the hexes. First I single crochet in every stitch and space to join. But I wasn’t happy with the look so I frogged it. I ended up using a slightly loose join by single crochet in each corner space and between corners I chained three, single crochet in the middle of the side followed by 3 chains. I think it looks better now. The side of the hexies will have to be stitched down too. I’ll probably just single crochet in the middle. Update: I slip stitched the sides of the hexes (in the back loops). When you crochet your hexes make sure you leave a long tail to use to sew up the hexes sides. I also positioned the long tail when attaching the hexes to each previous round so each side had one. I’ll add a photo when I attach the final white round.
As I crochet this I’m learning how to join and sew up the hexagons sides as I go. Now I’m more pleased with the results. It’s really quite stunning with the three colors in the round.
Good news: I bought two more turquoise (blue mint) skeins at Michaels while on vacation. These hexagons eat up the yarns so if you make this throw buy several skeins of each colors. I’m on the last round (rd 10 in white). I have 54 white hexes to crochet. That will be the last round then I will do a simple edging in the three colors.
Edging: It’s a free Pom Pom Edging from Robin at “Once Upon a Pink Moon”. I loved it on my hexie throw in red. Link: http://onceuponapinkmoon.blogspot.com/2013/09/pom-pom-edg...
12/30/13: I have to add I love this throw. It is so warm and cosy. Perfect for those cold winter nights in front of the fireplace.
