Such an AWESOME pattern for all those luxurious hand dyed yarn left overs!
Planning to knit the wavy part first and then the thumb panel sideways, too, working some short rows for the gusset. The waves look awesome, let’s see how the thumb panel turns out…
Jan 3, 2013: Finished, and the result is just perfect! This thumb panel version has just a thumb opening but for the next version I plan to make a proper thumb, too.
Mixed Wavy Mitts with the thumb panel worked sideways
Cast on 50 sts with CC1 using provisional cast on. Work the wave pattern as instructed in the original pattern. After the last wave with CC2, start thumb panel with MC (or alternatively knit 2 rows with MC and 2 rows with CC1 prior to thumb panel for wider mitts).
Knit 10 rows with MC.
Work the thumb gusset as follows:
- (RS) k35, turn work
- (WS) k3, w&t
- (RS) k3, turn
- (WS) k6, w&t
Continue the established short row pattern until you have just knit 18 sts in a RS row. Turn work. With the 35 sts knit 4 rows and then start shaping the thumb gusset with short rows in reverse order as follows:
- (WS) k18, w&t
- (RS) k18, turn
- (WS) k15, w&t
- (RS) k15, turn
Continue the established short row pattern until you have just knit 3 sts in a RS row. Turn work and knit two rows with the 35 sts. Don’t cut the yarn.
Now add a garter stitch panel above the thumb opening. Take another end of the MC yarn and knit 6 rows with the 15 sts just above the thumb opening, starting with RS row. Cut yarn.
Take the uncut MC yarn (left on hold after shaping the thumb gusset) and knit the 15 stitches of the upper garter stitch panel right after the 35 stitches of the thumb gusset and wrist. Now you have 50 sts on your needle and you have just knit one full row. Knit 9 more rows and cut the yarn, leaving plenty for grafting the seam.
Pick up 50 sts from the provisional cast on edge. Graft the seam and weave in ends.
Notes for adding the thumb and colourful thumb gusset can be found here.
