Hat base was made from the (old) Brainwaves Beanie pattern, using an H-hook. I followed the pattern rows 1-20 with no additional repeats, except one additional row of hdc after Row 20, using an H-hook.
I then followed the directions from the cozy viking helmet pattern.
For the bands, I changed to a G-hook.
Riveted band: Ch 51.
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook; hdc in each st across (49).
Row 2: 7hdc, (bobble, 5hdc) 2x, bobble, 9hdc, (bobble, 5hdc) 2x, bobble, 7hdc.
Sew riveted band from ear to ear, over the top of the hat. (It will be the first band you put on.)
Arrowed band:
Ch 52.
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook; hdc in each st across.
Row 2: Hdc in first 5 st, then begin arrow pattern from Celtic Crochet book. Hdc in last 5.
Sew arrowed band from back of hat to front at nosepiece. It should be sewn over the space between bobbles 3 and 4 on the riveted band.
Cabled band:
Strip is 9 stitches wide, and is as follows:
Row 1: Hdc in each st across (9).
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), fptr, hdc, fptr in next 4 st, hdc, fptr, hdc in last.
Row 3: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), bptr, hdc, bptr in next 4 st, hdc, bptr, hdc in ch 2 space.
Row 4: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), sk next 2 fptrs, fptr in next 2 (it will slant), go back and fptr each in the 2 skipped fptrs (creates crossed detail), hdc, fptr, hdc in ch 2 space.
Row 5: Repeat Row 3.
Repeat Rows 2-6 until desired length.
Sew cabled band around the circumference of the hat, so that it covers the ends of the riveted band and the arrowed band.
Weave in ends.
