Notes

My widest & most ends weaving project yet.

It’s 10 epi. Only have a 6 & 12 dent Reed’s for Shira. So I went with 1-2-2 in the reed.

Saturday 1-19-2019

Wound the warp & got it onto the loom. First time with so many ends. Also 1st time winding 2 warps for a project. Probably took about an hour to wind the warp.

The black warp was longer on the loom. But not too much so.

Really thought I had counted threads multiple times. But think I am 2 threads short on the red. But I also had one loop that seems to have been too long. So I think one got loose. But didn’t find enough for it to be 2 complete threads So basically, I am not sure what happened!

Got from winding the warp to sleighing the reed. Didn’t tie onto the beam as it was midnight & wanted to double-check that I sleighed the reed. It was short by about a 1/2”. So figured it was wiser to do that with a clear head tomorrow.

Sunday 1-20-2019

Glad I waited to tie onto the front apron rod! Had to rethread the reed 3-4 times. I realized I skipped a dent. Then I realized I skipped 4 threads in a bout that was were still with the heddles! Whoops!!

Had a couple more hiccups. But finally got it done & double checked. Now it was almost 18” in the reed as the draft says it should be. Minus the 2 missing red threads, it was where it should be.

I am grateful the project has a sampling section built into it
Within 4 picks, I discovered something was wrong. I had 2 threads in the reed backwards! Thankfully, I saw it early in the sample & was able to fix it.

FINALLY got to start weaving!

Got 1/2 the first pillow woven! Hooray! Though it helps that half of that is plain weave which requires not thought!

Monday 1-21-2019

Weaving is always faster than warping! First pillow done! Folllowing the class project.

Friday 1-25-2019

Pillow 2 done! Whoohoo. Love how fast it comes together.

Spent a good deal of the evening playing with patterns to figure out what I wanted to do for Pillow 3!

Pillow 3 - Saturday 1-26-2019 & Sunday 1-27-2019

I started weaving on Saturday & finished Sunday.

Decided to keep similar size of the blocks of color from pillow 2 for pillow 3.

For section 1 of the 3rd pillow, I decided to weave Draft 16 of the course materials. Got 2 repeats in and hated it. So I went back & started over. Realized I hadn’t done any basket weave. Wanted to give it a try. Definitely like result.

Section 2 is Draft 18 - 3/4, 2/4, 1/2, 2/4. I don’t think the pattern is as clear in the weaving as it is in the pattern. But curious to see if the fulling change it for good or ill.

Section 3 is Draft 19 - 3/4, 1/3, 2/4, 1/2, 2/4, 1/2. Really like the look of it. Think I would like to try that with a tight structure yarn.

The first three all used the same tie up as pillow 2. I had to change the tie up for the second section.

I did:
1-3
1
2
3
4
2-4

I have read that is a good tie up. Though Madelyn van der Hoogt has a piece about switching 2 & 3. I am sure there are good reasons. But I just can’t get my head around that yet. laugh

I thought I had everything on the guide tape for sections 4-6. But I think I may have flubber up & switched some! But I think these are the structures.

Section 4 is Draft 34 - 2, 1/3, 2, 4, 1/3, 4

Section 5 is Draft 26 - 3/4, 4, 1, 1/2

Section 6 is Draft 22 - 3, 2/4, 1, 2/4

Definitely more textured than pillow 2. A bit more dense overall. Happy with that.

Pre & Post Finishing Measurements

Width in loom was supposed to be 18”. But I definitely had more draw in than that.

The measuring tape was 36”. Definitely didn’t keep that off the loom.

Pre-Finishing

Starting Sample
16” for most but 17” for starting tabby
8” long

Pillow 1:
17” wide at tabby
15.5” with twill
33” long

15.5” wide
34 1/4” long

Pillow 3:
15”-15.5” wide for most but last is 16”
32 3/4” long

End Basketweave Sample
16” wide
9” long

Post-Finishing

Starting Sample
16” for most but 17” for starting tabby
7” long

Pillow 1:
16.5” wide at tabby
15.25” with twill
31” long

Pillow 2:
15” wide
31 1/2” long

Pillow 3:
15” wide for most but middle section 14.75” & last is 15.25”
31” long

End Basketweave Sample
15.25” wide
8” long

Waiting to Mark Finished - 1/27

Still waiting to mark as finished. Need to get the pillows & sew the pieces until I will count this as complete.

Weaving & finishing done 1/27. Of course, the sewing isn’t yet…

DONE!! MARCH 17TH!!

So…yeah. They sat for nearly two months before I sewed them. Being fair, I didn’t order the pillows for almost a month after finishing. So I can totally use that as an excuse.

LOVE THEM! I want to make dozens more. And totally get why people go into weaving. I want to weave way more than I can use!
