Notes

Please do not take how long it took me to knit this as any indication of how long it SHOULD take. I seem to have stalled on knitting time. It’s actually a pretty quick & easy knit!

One of the many kits I got from a Craftsy sale.

First one cast on - Snail Hollow shawl. Thanks so much Erika Flores for getting the pattern into Ravelry so quickly!

Love the pattern. Easy to follow. And the slip stitch areas are a lot of fun. Makes it look complex but really very simple. And repeats are easy to memorize. So makes it great knitting.

I was watch Chilling Adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch and there was a scene with a snail with two heads! Seems like an omen given the shawl name!

Changing Out Color

I got the Cloudborn Fibers Merino Superwash Sock Twist in the Stormy Skies colorway with the kit. The color is too blue for my tastes. Still grey but definitely a blue grey. And I am not a big blue fan. Stalled while trying to pick another yarn.

Picked up some Violet on a Bluprint sale. Pretty but way too muted. I think wanted a vivid, almost neon purple to pair with the magentas & neon blue pops in the Black Sea yarn.

Went back to looking.

What kills me is I am fairly certain I have a Knit Picks colorway I got with a sock kit. But I can’t find it!

I did a lot of looking for the second color. Finally broke down & hit Etsy! I wanted purple with pop.

I went with the Knight Bus colorway from Mint Rain. Picked the Twist Sock base so the fiber contents & yardage were similar. Definitely love the color combo. They work really well together. The Knight Bus if really vibrant & lovely!

Pattern Changes

Of course, being me, I modified the pattern almost immediately. With the Cloudborn Sock Splash yarn, there are blips of color in the black. I think that is highlighted more on stockinette rather than garter. So for the start garter section, I switched it to stockinette with a 3 st garter border on the edge without the picked up border.

Added to Triangle Length Meant Less Yarn for the Border!

So I like long & big shawls. So I added extra length as I went along. I used up a lot of the Black Sea. Only have a little left.

The tricky part was that meant having less for the cast on garter border along the side. Which is a bit sad. But I think it all works!

Cast Off

The pattern has an icord bind off for the applied garter border along the side. I found it wasn’t stretchy enough for me. I suspect my icord bind off is just too tight.

So I did some searching & found this bind off:

Like the way the finished edge looks. Looks good. Though might be a bit uneven. I am hoping it will look good in the finished product! Though part of me is a bit worried with trying different bind offs that I may have twisted some stitches getting them back on the needles. Hoping not… But only time will tell!

Off the Needles

Cast off on the bus trip into the city. Need to weave in a couple ends & block it.
