Notes

Gauge:

  • 22 sts x 32 rows = 4” in stockinette
  • 12 sts = 2” in fan pattern

Cece is 7 months old in the first two photos (4/8/17) and has a chest circumference of 18”.

Cece is about 5 months old in the outfit photo.

Little sister Tessa is 9 months old in the 4th photo (4/19/19).

My cousin loves this cardigan! She said she really likes the fan stitch.

My stockinette stitch gauge on size 3 needles is accurate but my stitch gauge in the fan pattern is 12 sts = 2” instead of 12 sts = 2.25”.

Since the baby will be born in September in San Diego, she will be able to wear a cardigan for about 5 months (October-February). I figured in this instance, the cardigan should be on the smaller side rather than the larger side to make sure the baby would have a chance to wear it before the weather warms up. The 21.75” finished chest measurement for the 6 month size seemed a little large to me.

I made the 6 month size but I cast on 59 stitches for the back instead of 61 and 32 stitches for the fronts instead of 33 to reduce the overall number of stitches by 4. That combined with my stitch pattern gauge being smaller, means the cardigan has a finished chest measurement of 20”. I worked the cardigan exactly as directed but with one less shoulder stitch.

The placement of the fan pattern is sort of weird. The pattern isn’t centered on the shoulders and it’s only partially bound off with the neck. If I were to make this again I would center the fan pattern so it continues up the shoulders.

Errata: Row 7 of Left Front Neck Shaping should read “knit to marker, k2tog, k1, yo, k1, k2tog, k1”

I think there is a typo in the sleeve instructions. After working all of the decreases the pattern says to work even until sleeve measures 5.5” long. After the decreases, the sleeve already measures 5.5”. The pattern then says to work 5 rows of garter for the cuff. The schematic says the sleeve length for the 6 month size is 6.5”. But 5 rows of garter is only 0.5”. I think the pattern is supposed to say to work even until sleeve measures 6” then work the garter stitch cuff. That’s what I did: I worked 4 more rows after the final decrease row before starting the cuff.

The only thing I am unhappy about is that the space between the top two buttonholes is a little larger than the space between the other buttonholes.

I used five 7/16” (3/8”-1/2”) stashed buttons from Jo-Ann Fabrics.
