The coral yarn faded to a gross orange color after hand washing in warm water using Eucalan. I sent the cardigan to Neighborhood Fiber Co. and they refunded my money and overdyed it (excellent customer service) but it came back looking patchy and still not quite the right color. After sitting on it for over a year and making a second coral Vianne out of different yarn, I bought some Rit dye at Jo-Ann Fabrics and dyed it black.
I washed the cardigan with Rit Color Remover and then dyed it in hot water in a plastic tub. I used half of the dye packet, 1.5 gallons of hot water, and half a cup of vinegar.
I followed the directions for the size S except I knit the bottom rib for 1.5” (10 rows) per the XS directions instead of 3” (20 rows) for a finished length of 16.5”.
My Panel A stitches looked really sloppy even after blocking. After searching the Ravelry forums, and finding this post I decided to knit the next stitch above the YO through the back loop. It made a big difference.
This was my first time alternating skeins. Alternating skeins while working short rows: work to the stitch to be wrapped, drop old yarn, pick up new yarn, complete the wrap.
I worked the body on size 7 needles and the ribbing on size 5 needles. I used Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off for the bottom bands and a standard bind off for the button band.
I used size 8 DPNs to knit the sleeves. I decreased down to 44 stitches for the lower arm instead of 42 and worked the last stockinette row and the ribbing on size 7 needles. That way the ribbing would look less sloppy than if it were worked on size 8 needles but the cuff wouldn’t be too tight.
I worked the button band on size 6 needles. I picked up 207 stitches. I only worked seven rows before binding off instead of eight because my intended buttons for the coral version were 5/8” instead of 3/4”. I ended up using 1/2” cat buttons from lotsofbuttons.com.
I made six buttonholes instead of five, I made the first buttonhole four stitches from the bottom instead of six, and I worked the buttonholes six stitches apart instead of eight.
