My mother bought a number of skeins of Alice Starmore Scottish Campion yarn with the intention of knitting a Fair-Isle sweater. She didn’t get around to it for a few years, and gave the yarn to me. There were about 20 balls in over a dozen colors, none of which are what I would call MY colors. So after having the yarn sit around in my stash for a year, I decided to try using it for a plaid weave on my 12” Ashford Knitter’s Loom (which was a gift from my parents this year).
I made up the pattern as I warped the loom. Since I had more skeins of the purple and dark teal than other colors, I alternated those in larger patches (10 ends for each purple section and 6-8 for each dark teal section), interspersed with 8-end sections of mixed yarns--with this many colors, I wanted to have some order to the pattern. Then I wove the weft in the same order.
It’s a little bright for my tastes. It’s also not really wide enough for a shawl, but I didn’t dare try to make two that matched to sew together! Fortunately my mother is short, so I think the width will be okay.
