Notes

A Scottish design knitted in Scottish wool bought in Edinburgh and cast on in that city. Love the cables in this and I think it will be a lovely, challenging knit. I’ve already learned a lot of new techniques. I really recommend Lucy’s book Celtic Cable Shawls.

Finished this in one week which has totally surprised me, but once you get into the rhythm of the repeats, it builds quite quickly. I didn’t swatch the wool however and I’m actually surprised how much smaller this turned out than the size in the book, even using fingering and 4mm needles. It’s about 10 inches shorter in length and about 2 inches shorter in depth. Yikes! So it’s definitely more of a scarf than a shawl, but I look at it as a swatch for the shawl I really want to do in the book which is Talesin. It also curls a bit on the edge even after some aggressive blocking. Debating whether to unpick a few rows and knit some garter stitch rows to increase depth. Or add some more crochet to the edge. Decided to add the contrast edging colour because I’d been using these cheery stitch markers made from recycled wellies and they just went so well with the gray.

EDITED to add - Duh, I realized I’d knit this with 3.5 not 4mm needles. No wonder it was so small. Feel like an idiot for this simple error, but will treat this as a swatch for other shawls in the book.

I’m completely hooked on cables now and feel like a cable queen after doing this shawl.
