Notes

I designed this scarf for Kate Davies’s My Place design competition. It will be featured on the KDD blog as part of the My Place project on Wednesday, March 24.

The My Place theme inspired me to create Winter’s End, a scarf design celebrating the Brookfield Farm in Amherst, Massachusetts.

Since 1996, I have been a shareholder at the Brookfield Farm, one of the oldest CSAs (community-supported agriculture) in the area. In March 2020, I took my camera to last year’s strawberry fields, which were planted with a winter cover crop of rye. I spent a happy afternoon walking up and down the fields, taking shots of the lovely rye fading into the ground.

For the scarf, I used a lace stitch that reminded me of rye and field rows, arranging the lace into three columns separated by small wrapped-clusters (a visual nod to the long-gone strawberries — always so delicious!). A bit of fringe rounds out the design.
