Notes

12/10 Nearly done. I used some fabric paint to make dots on the bottom of the soles to provide a little traction and also finished off the eyes with a dollop of black fabric paint in the center to make the pupils larger. Glad to be almost finished!
12/8 The blue pair is finished! I really love how the button eyes turned out.
12/7 One blue slipper complete, albeit still blind - I’ll need to get some buttons for eyes here soon…
12/5 Expect to be done with the blue and black versions in the next couple of days. The yellow pair will have to wait until after the holidays for finishing.
11/5 I’ll admit, I’m having second slipper syndrome, but I’ll have to get over it because I have 5 more slippers to make! And because my DS is smitten with the one - he’s happy to wear only the one, but really….
11/1 Nearly finished with the first one, just have a few more things to sew together and I need to thread the elastic through.
10/31 Finished with the head, the sole and the insole of the first slipper. I am changing up the pattern a bit as I wanted to use this yarn and I feel it would be too bulky held double, especially in this size. Instead I will be knitting it double layered, hence the sole and a separate insole. I also like that the sole will be the same color as the head and sides, and only the insole will be pink. I will also be adding elastic hidden between my layers that form the sides and the back of the foot so that hopefully these will stay put on active little feet!
10/30 color is slightly darker (more orange?) than in this photo. My son can’t wait to get them on his little feet! :)

12/25 ETA: from the recipients’ mother: “They fit perfectly and both boys love them.” So I guess this is a good method for a perfect fit. Yay!

Mods:
I am knitting these single stranded, but double thickness on the soles and sides. Face is knit completely according to pattern with size US 5 for XS and US 6 for S/M.

xs 6.25” foot/small 7.5” foot/medium 8.5” foot

Notes are for sizes XS (S, M)
Soles/Insoles made by tracing around the foot and comparing the shape of the foot to the shape of the fabric coming off the needles giving about 1/4” extra around the edge for the sole and 1/8 inch for the insole.

For the insole with US 5’s I cast on 6 (6, 6) stitches in CC and increased to 10 (10, 12) stitches in the first set of increases.

Insole Increases for the (XS) on rows: 25 (2 sts) and 31 (2 sts)
Insole Increases for the (S) on rows: 25 (2 sts),33 (1 st in center), 47 (2 sts)
Insole Increases for the (M) on rows: 9 (1 st in center), 37 (2 sts), 51 (2 sts), 57 (2 sts).

Insole Decreases for the (XS) on rows: 49 (2 sts), 57 (2 sts) - final decrease row from pattern on row 65 (4 sts).
Insole Decreases for the (S) on rows: 55 (2 sts), 64 (1 sts in center), final decrease row from pattern on row 69 (4 sts).
Insole Decreases for the (M) on rows: 63 (2 sts), 69 (2 sts), 75 (2 sts), 77 (2 sts), final decrease row from pattern on row 79 ( 4sts).

For the sole with US 5’s I cast on 8 (8, 8) stitches in MC and increased to 12 (12, 14) stitches in the first set of increases.

Sole Increases for the (XS) on rows: 27 (2 sts) and 33 (2 sts)
Sole Increases for the (S) on rows: 29 (2 sts),35 (1 st in center), 47 (2 sts)
Sole Increases for the (M) on rows: 33 (2 sts), 47 (2 sts), 54 (2 sts).

Sole Decreases for the (XS) on rows: 51 (2 sts), 59 (2 sts) - final decrease row from pattern on row 67 (4 sts).
Sole Decreases for the (S) on rows: 59 (2 sts), 65 (2 sts), final decrease row from pattern on row 71 (4 sts).
Sole Decreases for the (M) on rows: 60 (2 sts), 66 (2 sts), 72 (2 sts), 76 (2 sts), final decrease row from pattern on row 80 ( 4sts).

For the sides/back, I calculated where the sides should start by estimating with the face piece pinned in place and picked up 42 (47, 53) stitches around the lower sides and the back of the sole. I then knit 20 (24, 26) rows and created a casing for the elastic by picking up 42 (47, 53) stitches through the purl bumps on the inside of the slipper at about the 4th (6th, 9th) row from the sole edge and knit them together, stitch by corresponding stitch, with the stitches I had live on my needles (second to last photo). Then I knit 3 (5, 8) additional rows and cast off. I whip stitched the cast off edge to the ridge created by originally picking up my 42 (47, 53) stitches while at the same time catching the edge of the insole in every stitch to secure it to the sole (last photo).
