I really like the back of this sweater, and now that I have lowered the front, I like it much better than the original.
Mods:
- slipped front edge stitches
- lowered front (notes below)
- started waist decreases after 16 rows, then did 4 instead of 3, 1 every 6th row, as I had added 2 stitches to each side of the body at the underarm cast-on
- started waist ribbing on the back 4 rows lower, so I added 4 rows after the waist ribbing to be consistent, before starting the lower chart
- twisted rib for waist ribbing, and at hem and cuffs
- added decreases beside the expanding lower cable section (notes below)
Notes:
Ended back after armhole shaping at row 55, which is row 23 of the chart, and row 7 of the cable chart, per pattern. Body is 20.5 inches (unblocked) from armpit to hem. 10.5 cable ovals from neck to waist ribbing, 3 for waist ribbing, and 10 below waist to hem.
Front Edges - slip first stitch and knit/purl last stitch. I tried the ktbl each row, but didn’t care for the edge.
- maybe do icord at the end?
Front Shaping - I wanted to make this lower in the front, to be able to join just above my bust, without the top flapping open, while still keeping the nice soft u-shape of the pattern.
- I decided to delay the cast-on for the cable panel by 3 cable repeats (24 rows), as I needed to end up on the same row as the original pattern.
- I knit 30 rows then added stitches on the WS rows. 4 x 1 stitch (rows 32, 34, 36, 38), 2 x 2 stitches (rows 40, 42), 2 x 3 stitches (rows 44 and 46), then on row 48 I cast on 21 (using knitting cast-on as backwards loop was too unstable) to end up with the stitch count I was supposed to have.
Bottom Chart - I don’t like the idea of adding 50 stitches during the course of the chart without doing some decreases outside the chart as well. I looked at the finished projects and I think there is a lot of extra fabric at the bottom. Decrease (k2tog, ssk) every 6th row of the chart, so 3 increases to every decrease.
Sleeve - did 82 rows then started cables. Ended up with 1 less cable. 7 rows of rib - started new cable before I measured and found out I was already long enough. 18.5 inches inseam unblocked.
Tutorial for pbf, which is used for the increases in the bottom chart (this is titled pfb, but she actually does the pbf). Basically, you start to purl through back loop, then purl in front. link text
Yarn Notes:
- started skein 5 at row 53 of bottom cable chart.
- each sleeve took a full skein.
Gauge: 19 stitches and 26 rows = 4 inches.
