Notes

Note - look at the finished measurements, as the sizes seem to be super-large otherwise. Example, the S is 44/46 but the finished measurement is 36.75 inches.

Had to re-work this after sending it to the recipient. Neck too high, sleeves and body too long, and I didn’t like the zipper flap, so I ripped it back all the way to the separation of the fronts and re-knit. New changes:

  • shorter collar than pattern
  • did not do as many decreases when turning the collar for the inside lining. Cast off with stretchy cast-off as the collar is tight
  • icord placket instead of the hemmed flap
  • 5 inch zipper instead of 7 in prior version.

Final measurements: 18 inches side seam, 19 inches sleeve seam.

This yarn is labeled DK now, as it really knits up as a DK weight, not sport.

Matt asked for a half-zip mock turtleneck sweater that is heavier than the last one I made for him here, which he wears a lot (yeah!). I’m always happy to knit for family! Out of 9 patterns I sent him, he picked this one.

Notes:
Size M is slightly small, so will go up to 3.75 mm needle to end up with 42 chest.

  • cast on 212 (between S and M) with 3.5 mm needle for rib. Long-tail is suggested but ended up with a very curly hem, so I wouldn’t recommend it.
  • 212 stitches with 3.75 mm needle for body. Increased 4 stitches after about 8 inches so ended up at armpit with 216 - same count as his last sweater.
  • 16 allocated to underarm, with 92 for each front/back.

Sleeve - using size 3.0 mm needles and casting on 52 for S.

  • I don’t know why there is a faux side seam on the body of 2 purl stitches, and a faux side seam on the sleeves of a slipped knit stitch. I think next time I would do the slipped stitch for both body and sleeves, or only 1 purl stitch for the body.
  • end cuff with knit stitch. Increase per pattern on row 4 then every 10th row to 82. 5 more rows then put on hold. 66 for sleeve and 16 for underarm.

NOTE - the instructions for joining sleeves and body are strange, as the left sleeve and front are knit without the rest. MOD - start joining where the BOR marker will be - right front at the start of the right sleeve. Do 3 needle BO with 16 stitches, knit the back, then 3 needle BO with 16 sitches for left sleeve, then knit the front.

Great Tip from the pattern: To keep the holes between sleeves and body as small as possible, lift strand between sleeve and body onto left needle from back to front and ktog with the next st.

Yoke - worked per pattern without the extra 2 rows at start of sleeve decreases and it was still too deep. Check the measurements on the schematic. Mine matched the schematic, but made for a baggy armpit. Started decreasing each row at 40 sleeve stitches until 22. Move markers so 20 saddle stitches.

Collar - added 3/4 inch, so 3.5 inches high (long neck). I didn’t have the same yarn as MC in fingering, so did the zipper placket in the CC (Upton) in fingering weight. 89 st rib pattern and 79 stitches CC collar liner. Note - this was too high and too tight. New version - 93 stitches rib and 87 stitches collar liner.

Placket - I struggled with this as there were too many stitches and it ended up wavy. I ended up picking up 2 stitches for every slipped stitch for body and 2 then 1 stitches picked up for collar. 71 total, including 3 below the split. Instead of a 3-needle BO I bound off then stitched the bound-off edge to the pick up row - approx. every 2nd stitch. I tried the 3NBO but didn’t like the pulling. New version - icord. Pick up row, then purl row, then 4-stitch bind-off (smaller 3.25 mm needles).

For Next Time:

  • use a different cast-on other than long-tail - too twisty
  • follow instructions for joining sleeves and body as above
  • change body side seam to slip stitch? Or only 1 purl stitch as body side seam to match with sleeve seam?
  • decrease sleeve stitches on yoke per pattern for DH (or size M) but for anyone else, do more rapid decreases, as the yoke depth is too long.

Yarn Usage:

  • 100 grams of MC left from 5th skein. I didn’t weigh the skeins to see if they were accurate or not.
  • 10 grams of CC used for neckband.
  • 11 grams of CC fingering used for zipper plackets.

Finished Measurements from last sweater: 42 chest, 19 side, 21 sleeve.

Pattern Gauge: 4 inch = 22 sts x 30 rows in stockinette stitch and knitting in rounds, using needle size 3.5mm
(US 4) (after washing!)
4 inch = 24 sts x 30 rows in sleeve pattern and knitting in rounds, using needle size 3.5mm
(US 4) (after washing!)

My gauge: 21 stitches and 30 rows blocked on 3.75 mm needle = 4 inches.
