Making detailed notes in case I knit this again, as I spent a lot of time looking at various projects and patterns. I believe I have found the best way to do the ears - see below.
Knit from the tail-up.
Adapted for worsted yarn and small child size.
- Cast on 2 stitches,
- Increase 1 each RS row to 12 st, then every 4th row to 24 st, so not so pointy.
- Change colour. Knit 24 garter ridges.
- Decrease by 6 stitches, then 1x1 rib for 3 inches.
- Increase by 2 to 20 stitches, so the tail is wider than body.
- 50 garter ridges (about 11 inches from ribbing), then followed knitknotkiwi’s directions.
- Decrease next 3 rows by k1, k2tog each side - 14 stitches. Knit 1 row.
- Increase next 3 RS rows by k1 kfb each side - 22 stitches (making a neck with the decreases and increases)
- 2 garter ridges
- Start decreasing following Tahlie’s directions: K, k2tog, k…..k, k2tog, k every RS row 2 times. K, k2tog, k2tog, k…..k, k2tog, k2tog, k every RS row 3 times, then the 2-decrease row once until 4 stitches remain.
- 10 garter ridges, then bind off.
White Face - pick up and knit 22 st at widest row of head
kfb each row - 24, and repeat increase again next RS row - 26 stitches. Knit 2 rows.
- Start decreasing, but only the 2-stitch decrease rows, every RS row, until 6 stitches left.
- I had 17 garter ridges from the white pick-up in gray, so I knit 34 garter ridges in the white, mirroring what I did for the reverse, although not increasing past 20 stitches.
Finishing:
- embroidery is not my forte. Black nose (note - next time do the last couple of garter ridges for the gray face in black - save this step) and green eyes.
Stitched the gray face down with whip stitch to show the stitches instead of something invisible. May try invisible next time.
Ears - stockinette - from Twiga Hoodie method:
CO 10 sts with gray (outer ear) and 8 sts with white (inner ear).
Knitting in each colour as it comes up and twisting the yarn, knit 2 rows stockinette.
Decrease row (RS): Ssk, k to 2 sts before color change, k2tog, ssk, k to last 2sts, k2tog.
Next row & all WS rows: Purl.
Rep last 2 rows until 6 stitches left.
Next row (RS): Ssk, ssk, k2tog. (3 stitches, 1 st in white & 2 in gray)
Last row (RS): S2kp. Cut both yarns, leaving a long tail in gray for seaming. Draw this yarn through last st, drawing it to close.
Finishing: With yarn needle, weave in all ends, tucking remaining ends into ear and sew seam along side with tail of MC.
I whip-stitched the front of the ear and the back of the ear separately to the ridge where the white was picked up on the reverse.
