I am totally delighted with this sweater. I was craving something red, and this tweedy yarn is just gorgeous.
Considered doing this in Dandelion in similar colors, but as I bought the DDW tweed at Rhinebeck specifically with this sweater in mind, primarily inspired by this tweedy beauty here. I’ll do the necessary adjustments from fingering to dk.
Mods:
- I like the boatneck look, but cast on 10 fewer stitches for front and back, so it isn’t so wide. I want to be able to wear this without my bra straps showing, or without having to wear a tank.
- started from back raglan seam, vs. mid-back
- there were too many back increases in the short rows compared to the front, so stopped increasing until the front caught up
- bust darts - first turn 12 stitches from the side, then every 2 after that 6 times, to 2 before side.
- waist shaping - princess seam style 4x every 6th row decrease then increase.
- longer, with 2 rows each CC before 1 row MC then 12 4ows ribbing.
- I had planned to use the grey tweed as the bottom CC2, but most of the projects had a darker bottom, and I decided the gray was not what I wanted. Plus - I LOVE the red tweed, and I have enough to do most of the sweater, so the gray is relegated to trim.
Sleeves:
- start with red and 64 st on waste yarn, pick up 4 each side. First round decrease 2. 70 st.
- next decrease end of first red stripe, then every 8 rows to 46 stitches. 16 rows of ribbing with smaller needle. Bind off with larger needle.
My gauge is way larger than the pattern, which calls for fingering weight and 3.5 mm needles. I’m knitting in DK on 3.75 mm needles so it isn’t stiff. My gauge is 19 stitches and 26 rows to 4 inches on 3.75 mm needle, using the tweed.
- at sleeve split, 64 for sleeves and 95 for front/back. 200 total for body - 99 for back and 101 for front.
