This is my third Erich Engeln shawl project. It is based on his tablecloth pattern, Runde Deckchen B of Spitzenstricken Blatt 98. I did five instead of eight repeats of the pattern.

This small shawl isn’t really a fichu, but that’s the nickname it has acquired to distinguish it from all the other shawls I’ve made for my wife.

Towards the end of knitting the chart I realised that the shawl wasn’t quite big enough. I added an improvised border in a half drop pattern based on the final few rows of the chart. The shawl is finished with knitted loops done in this manner. For these loops I used double yarnovers, with four stitches knitted together between yarnovers, and nine stitches knitted into each loop.

There is a major error in the pattern. The very large holes near the edge of the tablecloth are not included in the chart. I believe the relevant rows should be inserted between rounds 91 and 93. I attempted to insert the holes in the shawl. My version is fine, but it doesn’t quite match the picture shown on the pattern cover.

The weight of the shawl is 82g.
