I had some yarn (leftover from a table runner, which was a house gift). Almost a full skein, but definitely, not enough…
I decided to start this project with a loose sort of commitment…
I named it “Linen Top (Swatch)”.
I used the designer’s needle size because I had previously made one other of her designs, and I obtained gauge with the suggested needle size on that pattern. I did not wish to make a swatch and block it.
The first rectangle will be the swatch, and I will see where it takes me…
I chose to add three stitches (49). (Using an odd number of stitches, will allow you to begin (and end) the eyelet rows with a k1). I knit 20 rows before and after the eyelet ridge, and 57 rows between ridges. I knew that I would not really know what I had until I blocked the first piece, which I recently did… (see first photo on bottom).
My finished rectangle is 21.5” wide (seems wide enough) and 16” long (too short). I was thinking of picking up stitches around the bottom and knitting added length. I did buy a second skein of the yarn at GYI!.
07-16-11 The second rectangle has been blocked. My current thoughts are to add a narrow crochet edging at neck and armholes and a wider bit of crochet at the bottom.
07-28-11 I am caught up a bit on my work, so today I did the seaming. Next I will single crochet all the edges in the same yarn.
Late Summer/Early Fall 2011 I worked on a crocheted edging with a size I hook. Size I (5.5 mm) was my first hook choice because the knitting needles I used had been the same dia: US size 9 (5.5 mm). But the crocheting really was way too loose! I had to rip it all away. And then it was Fall, and this project was put away with the thought that I should try again with an E hook.
06-08-12 FINISHED ON THE PLANE. I did begin to re-do the crochet edging in May of 2012 with a size E (3.5 mm) hook. It went quite well with only a few adjustments along the way. I finished on a plane shortly before landing on St Thomas, USVI. I wore it for dinner on my last night there.
I re-named it “Linen Top with Crochet Edgings”.
