This is the baby blanket that I’ve been knitting, made from the discloth pattern “Grandmother’s Fav Dishcloth”. It is knit on the diagonal, starting with 4 st and increasing every row till you get it as big as you want and then start decreasing every row. I used Bernat Super Value, 7oz skein, and weighed it so I would know what half was, because I would need exactly half to finish and not run out of yarn. I left a margin of error, and kept knitting and weighing until I decided 116 rows were enough and close to the half way point. I used #9 knitting needles. It finished with about 1/2 oz leftover, and that is great. The point that you have to make the decision is at the widest point from corner to corner, and you wouldn’t find out you had miscalculated till you got to the end. That is a very good reason to stop knitting the increase half before half the yarn is weighed out as used. This has a beautiful feel to it, as the garter stitch seems to be heavier than others and very fluid feeling in the hand. It has a rich and satisfying feel It did take me about a week to knit a blanket that is about 22” x 31”. I’m sad that no picture really conveys how nice this blanket is, and the eyelet edging is very nice.
Here she is wrapped up in it, laying her on the diagonal, and bringing up the bottom over her feet, then both corners over her chest, and a little over her head. I flipped the outer edge across her chest so you could see the eyelet edge better. She is a 15” preemie doll, not a full sized baby.
I started with a HUGE ball of yarn and I think I’m getting close to halfway, I weigh the item and then the ball and I make the change to start decreasing when I am still a little heavier in ball weight, to be sure I don’t run out of yarn.
