No. 50 - Tobacco Bag

The original instructions for the bag contain errors and omissions, the resulting bag is mis-shapen. These instructions were used to produce the sample bag, shown in the picture.

Instructions:
With Red, chain 8 and sl st to join in a ring, or form a sliding circle.

  6. [1 dc in each of next 4 dc, 2 dc in next], repeat around (72 dc)
  7. With Red, [1 dc in each of next 2 st, 2 dc in next; with Gold, 1 dc in each of next 6 sts], repeat around (80 dc, 8 repeats)
  8. With Red, [make 1 dc in each of the first four red sts, 2 red into the 1st gold, one gold into each of next 4 gold, 2 red into next gold], repeat around ending with 2 dc in next red (96 dc)
  9. [One red into each of next 6 red, 1 red into next gold, 1 gold into each of next 2 gold, 1 red into next gold, 1 red into each of next 2 red]; repeat around (96 dc) 10-11. Work entirely in Red, 1 dc in each dc (96 dc)
  10. The Greek Key pattern is commenced in this round. Work 1 dc in each dc as follows: 8 Gold, 2 Red, [10 Gold, 2 Red], repeat around ending with 2 Gold (96 dc, 8 repeats)
  11. Continue working 1 dc in each dc as follows: [6 Red, 2 Gold, 2 Red, 2 Gold], repeat around (96 dc)
  12. Continue working 1 dc in each dc as follows: [2 Red, 6 Gold, 2 Red, 2 Gold], repeat around (96 dc)
  13. Continue working 1 dc in each dc as follows: [2 Red, 2 Gold, 6 Red, 2 Gold], repeat around (96 dc)
  14. Continue working 1 dc in each dc as follows: [2 Red, 10 Gold], repeat around (96 dc) 17-24. Work entirely in Red, 1 dc in each dc (96 dc) 25-29. Repeat Rounds 12-16 30-31. Work entirely in Red, 1 dc in each dc (96 dc)
  15. [1 dc in each of next 2 sts, ch 2, skip 2], repeat around (48 dc, 48 ch)
  16. Ch 2 (counts as first sc), sc in each st around, sl st to join (96 sc) 34-37. Repeat Rounds 32-33 twice.

Cut and weave in ends. Make two chains or braids long enough to thread through the holes around the top, finish the ends with crocheted balls or pompons. Finally, finish the Van Dyke pattern at the bottom of the bag by embroidering with Red, from the valley of each “V” to the center bottom of the bag to form diamond shapes. (Note: Sample shows a “diamond” shaped design.)
