Knit with three of the new Elliebelly Big Blue colors: Herb Garden, Muslin, and Peacock.
I really enjoyed this knit! There is a lot of variation among finished projects, and I’ve included some notes I found it helpful to read, below.
My color change sections are definitely not brioche. I followed the directions precisely. At first I thought that my stitch count must be off, which could have lead to this. But, when I got to the picot edge bind off, my stitch count was spot on.
There are some notes below which may illuminate this, but since I was really happy with the way mine looked and got the same pattern in both color transition section, I decided to go with it.
It was all very easy to memorize and carry around. The only place where I needed a bit of quiet and ability to pay attention was on the last color section, the mesh. It went so quickly that this wasn’t a problem. But, note the pattern clearly states that there is a one-stitch garter edge in each row in the mesh sessions and that it does NOT include the one-stitch on either end on the directions that follow.
Some pattern notes I found it helpful to look at:
Skiesfyre:
Pattern Corrections
The Increase Row & the Andalusian Stitch:
Row 1 & 3 (RS): K2, yo, k1, yo; knit to 4 sts before end; k2tog, k2.
Rows 2 & 4 (WS) remain the same
N.B.: 1 repeat of the Andalusian Stitch increases the stitch count by 2 stitches.
Brioche Colour Transitions:
Row 3 (WS): With Colour A/Old Colour P2, p1, s1wyif to stitch marker, p3, yo, p1, yo p2
--There is a trick to speed up this row, which I have described at the very bottom of these notes because I can’t find a non-Craftsy-class video of it.
Row 4: Following Little Chuch Knits’ pattern as written for Row 4 will result in the bumpy version my pictures show. If you want that, go for it! If you want the brioche lines shown in the photos on the pattern page, here is the correction:
With Colour B/New Colour, K2, p1, k1 to stitch marker, p6, k2.
N.B.: 1 repeat of the Brioche Colour Transition increases the stitch count by 4 stitches.
To get the stitch count the pattern lists at the end of Brioche Colour Transition #2 (108 sts), you will need to repeat Brioche Colour Transition #1 FOUR times total, not three. If you run short of yarn at either colour transition, you’re gonna have to do some math to make sure you end Brioche Colour Transition #2 with a multiple of 3.
Netting Stitch:
Row 3 should be: yo, sl1 knitwise wyib, k2, psso2, repeat to last st, k1.
Brioche Colour Transition Row 3 Speed Up Trick:
Begin Row 3 with the P2, slip marker, p1; you should be at the first sl1 wyif of the row. Put your right needle through the next two stitches as if to purl 2 together. Wrap your yarn as normal, but only pull the yarn through the second (farthest) stitch as you pass the stitches off the left needle. Repeat until 1 stitch before the marker, slip 1 wyif, slip marker, p3, yo, p1, yo, p2.
--Go slow at first to make sure you don’t p2tog by accident, but once you’ve got the hang of it, this will make Row 3 go faster. I’m an English/Western knitter; I don’t know if this trick works in Continental, Eastern, or Combination. I learnt this trick from Lucy Neatby in her Knit Along Socks 2016 Craftsy class.
Stockwelljd:
If you’d like to get the brioche stitch pattern to look like the one in the picture, you’re going to have to follow Skiesfyre’s directions and change the 4th row. They also noted a change to retain the garter edge. Also, if you haven’t done brioche before (like myself), make sure to slip all stitches purl wise. With all the changes noted above, written out the brioche section should be:
Row 1 (Color A) - K2, yo, k1, yo, k1, sl m, (k1, sl1 p-wise wyib) to m, k2 SLIDE
Row 2 (Color B) - p2, k4 (P1, k1) to m, P2 TURN
Row 3 (Color A) - P2, (P1, sl1 p-wise wyif) to m, P3, yo, P1, yo, P2 SLIDE
Row 4 (Color B) - K2 (P1, K1) to m, P6, K2 TURN
