Notes

I made a complete Barda costume from crochet. You can see the details here. For information on the helmet, go here.

The only really tricky part of this project was figuring out how to make the basic shape of the megarod. I was gonna use a toilet paper tube and sort of hope for the best, but then a friend suggested a dollar store flashlight for the base, and that was brilliant.

So, take dollar store flashlight, leftover cardboard circle from some ribbon yarn, and a small mason jar, and duct tape the hell out of it. I used the duct tape to help refine the shape to get something more mega rod-ish. Once everything was taped to hell and back, I made a circle base as wide as the base of the narrow end and just worked my way up, increasing as needed.

Up near the top, to get the appropriate detailing, I did a round of bubble stiches, then three rounds of single crochet, then another round of bubble stitches, then three rounds sc, and one more round of bubble stitches.

For the lid of the mason jar, I worked from the top down, starting with the little nobble and then increasing until the piece was as wide as the lid. I then worked downward, finishing off with a round of bubble stitches that was pretty equally spaced from the other rounds.

The mason jar, by the way, will be used to hold snacks on cosplay day. A nice little bonus to putting it to work.
