So, two weeks before Halloween, I looked at the calendar, realized I had a party to go to, swore like the Guy Gardner fan I am and ran to the craft store to pick up supplies.
I’ve been a GL for Halloween twice before, with varying results on how the costume turned out. I think this one (all three have been crocheted to some extent) turned out best, even if I did have to throw on leggings so I wouldn’t embarrass myself at the party.
It’s made entirely in single crochet, working from the bottom up. I did the white bar color changes as I went, and I made the rings (which are a variation on the Green Lantern symbol) separately and then hand-sewed them into place.
The neckline was basically a screw-up I rigged into a fix when I realized I’d blown my placement for the armholes. At this point, I was down to less than 48 hours before the party and still had to finish the jacket you see in the second pic (it goes along with the character; I don’t hate anyone named Jordan myself). I single crocheted the front and back armhole bits together, and then I did two rounds of the white trim to try and give it a retro-future vibe that would speak to the fact that every GL costume (in the comics) is designed specifically by the person wearing it.
You can’t see it in the pics, but the white yarn has some sparkle to it and was intentionally chosen for the sparkle because GLs glow when they’re powered up, and I wanted to call back to that.
Other than adjusting the armholes if I do it again, I’d also use a different body yarn than the one pound. While I know it’ll soften up some when washed, this particular color actually slowed me down with its stiffness.
Still pulled it off, though. GLs are chosen for having great willpower, and I feel like getting this thing finished is well within the spirit of the whole thing.
