A friend who is a wonderful knitter got me thinking about doing bias in the round. I did a small sample and decided I wanted to do a cowl out of this handspun from last winter. The handspun consists of two braids, BFL, I believe both were Dicentra purchased at Black Sheep a few years ago. I stripped them and used interchangeably as they were very close in color. The design was fun, but it’s certainly not perfect.
I basically knit on a 16” circular needle with two stitch markers, one at the beginning of the round, and 1 half way. I knit the first stitch then decreased, knit to 1 stitch before the halfway marker, increased, knit 1, slipped marker, knit 1, increased, knit to 1 stitch before end of round, decreased. If I do it again, I’ll actually write it down!
I did some colorwork with the Heirloom yarn (a goodly portion of that fleece comes from the wonderful Romney sheep at Web-ster’s owner’s flock, and I really love the color. It is slightly heavier than the handspun, but I like the way it worked.
I didn’t do a provisional cast on at the beginning, but knew that I wanted to do an i-cord bind off. At the end I knit one row of the Heirloom, then I picked up stitches at the cast-on onto another needle, like a 3-needle bind off. However, handling two needles, doing an i-cord and binding off made my head spin, so I went clear around and alternated front and back stitches on one needle. So much easier. I did the i-cord and bound off at the same time.
Yes, it would have been good to write all the steps down, but I didn’t. I’ll be wearing this one a lot this winter!
