Used same wool/alpaca yarn as for the Mocha Fingerless Mitts (harvested from sweater).
DH likes to pull a cowl up over his nose while snow-blowing. This works well until it gets wet, loosens up and begins to slip down, so I wanted to make him a snugger-fitting one.
It was Christmas Eve and I thought it would be faster to make the “body” of this cowl in plain stockinette stitch, instead of some kind of rib stitch like his older ones.
Working from the top of cowl down.
You can get similar results by working bottom-up and doing decreases as in this pattern - Simple Fitted Cowl.
Here’s how I figured the number of stitches to cast-on: His hands are 8 3/4”. His head 22”, minus 1 for extra snugness = 21”. 8 3/4 x 2.4 = 21. Number of stitches in mitts, 40 x 2.4 = 96 stitches.
Cast-on 96 stitches with a #7 needle.
Knitted in 2x2 rib for 2” on #5 dpns. (actually used 3 #5s and 1 #6 - still haven’t searched the loveseat)
Switched to stockinette stitch for 2 1/2” on #6s.
Continuing in stockinette, I increased the cowl’s diameter by changing needle size -
2” with #7s and then 2” with #8s
Finished with 2x2 rib for 1 1/2”, still on #8s.
Total cowl height ten inches.
