First pattern will be issued tomorrow. I have added a graphic to my photos showing how I might assemble the Afghan. A symbol is assigned to each pattern and associated with each of the colours if 3 of each pattern is assigned to two colours, as suggested. i had worked out something a little different, but it wouldn’t be so easy to knit up in the allotted time.

Just finished the first square, five more of this pattern to go. Seems to be knitting almost to gauge. I cast on with the cable method, not long tail. I much prefer this method of cast on, I think it is neater and matches the cast off edge better. This square hasn’t been blocked yet and looks a bit uneven because it is curling. I’ve just read AnnR’s post about blocking and will make a few templates on which to pin my squares out.
P.S. I adjusted my graphic, as I noticed I had made a small error on the one I posted to the sticky thread for this kal. Strange that I chose that particular graphic for this pattern! How odd!

Completed two more squares tonight, just one more of pattern 1 to complete in the second colour. I’m rather disappointed with this yarn, so far. It is rather rough on my hands and so I am not really able to knit at full speed as my hands are getting quite painful. I may restrict myself to knitting one square per day in the future.

Completed all of the squares for this pattern; i.e. 3 squares in raspberry and 3 in candy. Pattern 2 will be in knitted in the remaining two shades. I am now a bit concerned about my tension being slightly too loose and am considering re-knitting all of the squares on 4mm needles. I may do a test square in the remaining wool and see if it works out any better before I go ahead and do this.
I’ve now rearranged my layout, correcting the errors in the original and adding numbers to the patterns for clarity. I should now be able to assemble the Afghan so that there are no repeats of the same pattern in any horizontal or vertical row, and all the colours will alternate A, B, C, D A, B and C, D, A, B, C, D on alternate rows of 6. Giving a total of 12 squares of each of the 4 colours = 48 squares.

I have re-knitted all 6 squares on 4mm needles and blocked them to 20cm. I feel a lot better now that this is done. The colours used for clue 1 were C and D
29/04/2014
Finished 3 squares of clue 2 in A the second colour for this clue will be B. (29gm remaining after knitting 3 squares from a skein of A - sufficient for another whole square!. If I get 4 from a skein of each I should have a whole skein of each left after this knit! £20 + worth of wool!!!)

Have just blocked the second set of 3 squares for clue 2….. I love this colour
07/05/2014
Completed 3 squares of clue 3, but will block all of them after I’ve completed all 6 squares. This is a simple lace pattern and the square seems to be knitting to approximately the same dimensions for me as the last two.

Another 1 1/2 Raspberry squares done. only one more Candy square and the remaining 1/2 Raspberry to complete this clue. I read in a post from Rowan that needle size may need to change for each square to obtain the right gauge. I hope not. I seem to have managed to knit 4 squares from one ball of wool. This would mean one too many purchased for each of the four main body colours. But the cable squares will not be so economical to knit so I think I will probably need to use the 4th ball.
10/05/2014
All 6 clue 3 done. Blocking now required.
13/05/2014
Having endless problems with the 4th clue. Too short so increased the length by adding two rows to the stocking stitch top and bottom. this is now OK but I just wonder if I’m doing the right thin by doing this. Anyway I think I will continue with the slightly longer version and adjust if necessary later. Also, for some reason -probably tiredness- I keep making mistakes and having to unpick. This is not a difficult pattern so I don’t really understand why. I think I have also mad mistakes with the lean of the decreases, but I might just make an extra square rather rip this square back.
Whoops !
I should never do anything when I’m tired. I decided to rip the wrong one and ripped back the correctly knitted one in error!!!!!! So Im’ back to square one with no square for clue 4 knitted having knitted it 3 times!!!!!!!
Start again from scratch tomorrow.
15/05/2014
Knitted two squares of clue 4 with no errors in the pattern. Added 2 rows to stocking stitch bottom and top. Although others have decided not to add the rows I don’t want some squares to be over stretched when it comes to making up, so decided I would.
17/05/2014
Finished all 6 squares of clue 4 (no photos yet) and am currently blocking clue 3, which are by far the largest of all the squares so far; actually had to pat them to a smaller size rather than stretch them. I think making up will be quite interesting as all the squares are coming up different in size.
18/05/2014
Finished the 4th clue; washed, blocked and ends sewn in for all clues. Decided not to leave ends to sew in as this will look neater than using them to sew the squares together; especially as I am not sure of the method that will be recommended. I hope this will be a very lovely blanket, as it will have cost quite a considerable amount to make, I am trying to make this the best way I know how.

Completed one 1.5 squares of clue 5. Dots & Dashes. I’ve read all of the comments about the variations people are using but decided to go with westie99’s version which just passes the last stitch back to the left needle and knitting it through the back of the loop. This does make the bobble stand out more with very little more work. I like this square and it seems to be knitting up to gauge too.
21/05/2014
Colours are Magenta and Rosy again for clue 5. that’s just how it fell in my plan. Concerned that the clues won’t fit together properly if the edging doesn’t match. It is curious how clues 1 and 3 only have edging top and bottom and clues 2,3 and 5 have it all the way round. completed 3.5 squares for clue 5.
24/05/2014
All 6 squares of clue 5 complete and clue 6 pattern was issued early so is available to knit now. As luck would have it, I probably won’t be able to start this clue ‘til next week! But, this clue will be knitted in Magenta and Candy once I can start.
27/05/2014
Completed 2.5 squares. I only used the cable needle for the first square. It was really irritating just having a single stitch on the cable needle and decided to twist the stitches by knitting the second stitch first and first stitch second and slipping both off the needle at once to create the “cable”. Obviously maintaining the different direction of the front and back stitches. Difficult to explain, but I will on the blog post for this clue. This stitch was not worth getting a cable needle out for.
29/05/2014
Finished knitting clue 6 and have sewn in all ends of 5 and 6, which both now need blocking. I’ll be using masking tape to set the size of the squares. I have also posted how to do mini cables my way onto my blog here.

I’m not the only one who noticed the difference between the pattern and the photograph for clue 7. I knitted it as the pattern but think that the photo will be the better version so may unpick the last few rows. I may just knit another square first to compare the two before I unpick. another thing I feel about this is that the top and bottom garter band are ill matched; I may add a couple of rows of garter stitch top and bottom and take out a bit of the cable. The photograph of this in Candy show the 10 cable version. The ends haven’t been sewn in as I think this may be “frogged”. There was a knot and very bad fraying, thus the two “joins at the edge on this square.
03/06/2014 (2)
I knitted another square with only 59 rows and it is too small. I think I’ll stick with the 10 twist version with a minor adaptation to the top and bottom border.
08/06/2014
Completed the 6 squares of clue 7. I didn’t re-knit the first square, so this is a little shorter than the others. I’m sure this will disappear into the overall pattern once everything is assembled. This will be my deliberate mistake….
10/06/2014
Completed 1.5 squares of clue 8 in Raspberry. Added a couple of garter rows top and bottom for the aesthetic. not sure if it was necessary but these squares are now identical in size to (pre-blocked) clue 7. Also, I have substituted k2tog tbl for the sl1 k1 psso, as it gives the same right slant. The second colour for this clue 8 square will be in, the curiously named, Rosy. I’ll block the last 4 clues after I’ve finished knitting all 48 squares. What has Martin got in store for us for the border?
14/06/2014
Finished knitting all of the squares today and am now considering my next move. The trim has been issued but I think I’ll finish blocking all of the squares before I start knitting the trim. I think they may issue the piecing method early next week and I want to see this before I carry on. I’m thinking of attaching the trim as I knit it and turn the corners as for a Russian shawl (short row style). The discussion has been tremendous regarding the trim. Most contributors seem not to like it. I think I’ll stick with it as I have for the rest of the KAL.
17/06/2014
I’ve just washed and blocked my last 6 squares in Raspberry. and I thought I would lay out the pieces in the order I had planned omitting the last squares that are still pinned out and drying. I noticed a mistake in the first column whilst laying them out. All that was necessary was to swap the two Magenta squares in rows 6 and 8. The “knight’s move” pattern is still preserved and there are no two patterns the same in horizontal or vertical rows. The diagonal will always have a different colour but may be the same pattern. Each colour is a knight’s move away from the same colour.
18/06/2014
Started to sew up my edge pieces; 24 squares (half the total number for the whole blanket)! Once they are done I can start knitting up the trim. I could also sew together the centre separately and piece it in after the edge has been knitted on. This will reduce the weight of the knit considerably.
21/06/2014
Finished sewing all the edge pieces and started to knit the edging directly onto the blanket. However, I’m not liking how it looks very much; someone else said the same thing and decided to go the sew on route. I’ve been thinking I might revert to this too. I don’t want to spoil it at the last hurdle.
27/06/2014
Taking my time to knit the cable trim. I am making Dayana corners. There are four cable repeats per square and I am starting to knit the corner, as suggested, immediately after the cable twist on a wrong side row. I have introduced a cable towards the end of turning the corner (C6B (or C8B)) and it seems to sit correctly. I am stitching the cable trim to the blanket with slip stitch once I have steam blocked that part of the trim, but I have left quite a bit loose so that I don’t have to carry the whole thing on my knees in this hot weather. No photos yet but hope to take some at the weekend.
13/07/2014
Finished sewing up the 24 centre pieces ready to join to the 24 edge pieces, once the trim has been fully attached. This too is nearly finished but the last piece of trim needs to be steam blocked before slip stitching it onto the edge and the ends of the trim need to be grafted. I have definitely lost my impetus but am determined to finish this blanket by the end of the week. Still no photos.
19/07/2014
Photos added. Trim finished and slip stitched in place.
All that remains to be done to finish the Afghan is to mattress stitch the centre 24 squares to the outer 24 squares. A job for next week. (The picture shows how it should look once made up).
26/07/2014
Project complete. All sewn up and ends sewn in. Looks OK.
Photographs uploaded of finished blanket, back and front views.
